PLUM BRANCH, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) -- According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, one car veered off the road in Edgefield County, claiming the life of the driver.

SCHP troopers said it happened around 6:00 p.m. on South Carolina Highway 283 near Turkey Road. That location is around seven miles north of Plum Branch, S.C. The driver was driving a 2002 Kia SUV and was not wearing a seatbelt when the car, traveling south on SC 283, veered to the right off the road.

Troopers say the driver then overcorrected, veered off the left side of the road, overturned and hit a tree. The driver was ejected from the vehicle, and pronounced dead on the scene. There were no other passengers in the vehicle at the time.

The Edgefield County Deputy Coroner identifies the driver as 53-year-old Edward Richard Elgin of McCormick. Elgin passed away at the scene of the crash.
