ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — One person was killed after a car crashed into a historic downtown Athens building overnight, triggering a partial collapse, police say.

The incident happened at the intersection of E Broad Street and N Jackson Street, according to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department. Photos show the vehicle hit Magnolias Bar of Athens, a popular spot on the edge of the University of Georgia’s campus.

At around 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, police said they were called to do a welfare check on someone with suicidal thoughts. But when they arrived, the person drove off.

Police didn’t pursue the vehicle, and officers said it crashed into the building two blocks away, killing the driver.

The driver was identified as Kevin Cissner.

Police are asking the public to avoid E Broad Street from Lumpkin Street to Thomas Street, as well as the surrounding side streets, while crews clean up debris.

Murphy Wolford, the building’s owner, told Atlanta News First it was constructed in the 1880’s and is a cherished local landmark. He said engineers are warning people not to walk inside, as there are cracks. The car also destroyed a giant beam in the front corner.

Despite the damage, Wolford vowed to rebuild. The building will be shored up and blocked off in the meantime.
