Georgia’s next attorney general is former federal prosecutor, state lawmaker
ATLANTA, Ga. — Tanya Miller was elected Georgia attorney general, defeating Republican Brian Strickland for the state’s top law enforcement office.
Miller becomes the first Black female ever elected to Georgia’s top law enforcement office.
Her election was part of a historic blue wave across Georgia for statewide offices that includes Keisha Lance Bottoms’ historic gubernatorial victory, plus other Democratic wins in down-the-ballot races.

If anyone doubted whether Georgia remains the epicenter of American politics, Tuesday night officially settled the debate.

Miller and Strickland were running to replace outgoing Attorney General Chris Carr, who launched an unsuccessful governor’s bid earlier this year.
Miller is an ex-federal prosecutor and former Fulton County homicide prosecutor. She was elected to the state House in 2022 and elected Democratic Caucus Chair after one term.
Strickland, an attorney in McDonough, served in the state House from 2013-18 and chaired its industry and labor committee. In the Senate, he served as both Gov. Nathan Deal’s and Gov. Brian Kemp’s floor leader. He also has chaired the powerful Senate judiciary committee since 2021.
