TALIAFERRO COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Two people are behind bars in Taliaferro Count, accused of trying to take a large amount of drugs from California to Charleston.
One Taliaferro County Deputy was patrolling I-20 when he saw a man in a motor home swerve into the other lane. When he pulled him over he found almost $1-million in drugs. Those drugs now fill more than 200 garbage bags at the Taliaferro County Sheriff’s Office.
"304 point 5 pounds of marijuana approximately and about 6 sheets of wax, THC wax," Sheriff Marc Richards took News 12 through the details of the massive bust. “My in-addiction guy pulled him over and he'd been smoking marijuana and he smelt marijuana in the vehicle."
The deputy had the right to search the motor home when he saw he had been smoking, and that’s when he found more than expected.
"When he searched the vehicle he got up in the vehicle and started noticing hidden compartments and everything that was changed a little with the compartments on the outside when he got close to look at it."
Behind a stocker, the deputy saw the motor home had been cut into. When he opened the compartment he found bags upon bags of marijuana. When he stepped inside the vehicle he found even
of the drug, stuffed into cabinets.
"This had so much marijuana in it we had to get a deputy to drive it back and unload it at the sheriff's office.”
It's the most marijuana Sheriff Richards has seen in one car. The sheriff's office caught the driver just 200 miles short of completing his third cross-country trip with marijuana.
"This guy was coming from California, headed to Charleston, so he had probably run about 2000-2500 miles. And this is his third trip.”
The Sheriff's Office says this motor home will be seized, and they can use that money to buy law enforcement equipment, like another patrol car.
