4 injured in ‘frightening’ Ga. train crash with big-rig
ATLANTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Four people were injured in a fiery train crash with a semi-truck in Fulton County on Wednesday afternoon, according to police.
A spokesperson for South Fulton police said the train hit a semi-truck hauling a dump truck near the intersection of Stonewall Tell Road and Westbrook Road, which is near the border of South Fulton and Union City, around 2:24 p.m.
Video showed smoke rising from the CSX train and the cab of the truck on the side of the tracks with debris scattered across the area.
“It was just like a movie to actually see something like that,” said Delmas Williams, who saw the crash. “It was frightening because you hope everybody makes it through.”
According to police, two people in the truck were injured and two people on the train, a conductor and an engineer, were checked out to see if they were OK.
Police previously said three of the victims had serious injuries and one was in critical condition.
Union City Fire & Emergency Services said they and South Fulton firefighters responded to the crash.
Arrest made in connection to robbery of hit-and-run victim
The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office says it may have recovered a necklace they say was stolen from a 23-year-old who was killed in a hit-and-run.
“We had two major injuries from the tractor-trailer. The train did not derail, but there was an active fire on the tracks and the train itself,” said Assistant Chief Jake Jenkins with City of South Fulton Emergency Management.
The driver of the truck was ejected and treated at the scene by South Fulton fire crews before being taken to Grady Memorial Hospital by Grady EMS, Union City fire officials said.
The fire department said the passenger in the truck had minor injuries and was able to exit the vehicle on their own.
Fire officials and a CSX spokesperson confirmed the train crew were not injured.
The CSX spokesperson said the crash caused the train’s engine to catch fire, which was quickly contained and extinguished by the South Fulton Fire Department.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash.
