PHOENIX (KPHO/Gray News) — A married couple drowned on Halloween while floating on the lower Salt River in an inflatable kayak.

Arizona authorities said they were called to the river Saturday afternoon for reports of a man yelling that his wife couldn’t swim as the two floated downstream.

According to investigators, both the man and woman went missing underwater.

The woman’s body was found just after 2 p.m., with her husband’s body located upstream about an hour later.

Deputies identified the couple as Cindy Bowers, 68, and Anthony Beringer, 59. They were sharing one kayak, and neither was wearing a life jacket, the sheriff’s office said.

The couple’s deaths remain under investigation.
