United Way of the CSRA hosts annual book drive
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - The United Way of the CSRA hosted its annual book drive Saturday.
The event is a partnership between United Way, AmeriCorps VISTAS, Rise Augusta and the Doctor Paulette P Harris Literacy Center. Both the Hub and the Harris Literacy Center contribute to collecting books to prepare for the event.
This year, United Way was able to collect over 7,000 books, which was higher than in previous years.
With over 200 families signed up, the event’s biggest goal is to encourage reading.
“To spend time and trying to make sure we’re reaching that goal of excelling when it comes to our reading assessments and tests in our community, and that’s the biggest thing that we want to do,” said Cathy Cuenca, AmeriCorps VISTA leader.
Organizers say it’s important to take the time to just sit and read, whether it be a comic book, newspaper or magazine.
They encourage parents to take advantage of all the resources the Hub has to offer.
