4 people killed in plane crash near S.C. airport
UNION, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - The Union County Coroner has released the identities of the four people killed in a plane crash near Union County Airport Friday evening.
The people aboard the plane were:
- James Moffatt, 60. He was the pilot.
- Leasa Moffatt, 61
- Andrew Moffatt, 30
- William Moffatt, 28
All were residents of Huntsville, Alabama, the coroner said.
According to the coroner, the four people were members of the same family and were flying from the Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina area to the Huntsville, Alabama area.

Before the incident, the aircraft made a stop in Union County to refuel, the coroner said.
The Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) said a Mooney M20P crashed near Union County Airport around 6:30 p.m.
The Forestry Service had to use a bulldozer to clear a path to the source of the smoke, which was found to be a single-prop plane, deputies said.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) sent an investigator to Union County.
During its investigation, NTSB said investigators will look at three primary areas: the pilot, the aircraft and the operating environment.
The aircraft may be removed from the site sometime next week, according to NTSB investigators.
The FAA, the NTSB, the Union County Sheriff’s Office and the Union County Coroner’s Office are investigating.
NTSB said a probable cause of the crash, along with any contributing factors, will be available in the final report, which is expected in 12 to 24 months.
