Industrial boom signals more jobs coming to Orangeburg County

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - Local leaders say a new horizon for job opportunities is coming as the industrial landscape in Orangeburg County grows exponentially.

Just this week, leaders are hearing plans for another new industrial development project, days after a groundbreaking for another project that will create hundreds of jobs. Many of these new jobs will not require a college degree.

Film industry expected to grow in S.C. due to updated tax incentives

In the time it’s taken to complete “Christmas in Mistletoe”, the guidelines for film tax rebates for have changed in South Carolina.

“I think it’s a great idea. Because there are so many people that want work and don’t have an education to get certain positions,” said Julie Isaac, who lives in Orangeburg County.

Census data shows only about 20% of people in Orangeburg County 25 or older have a bachelor’s degree or higher. The county currently has the fourth highest unemployment rate in the state.

Officials say this industrial growth could help them turn a corner on those statistics.

One of the latest plans

A manufacturer announced Tuesday it picked Orangeburg County for its first South Carolina operation, a $7.4 million investment that will create 49 new jobs.

The company is Mission Critical Interior Solutions, a data center solutions contractor and manufacturer that’s based in Dallas.

MCIS creates architectural solutions for the data center industry, specializing in the design and installation of containment, raised access flooring, security cages and cabinets, and structural ceiling systems.

“In addition, MCIS designs, manufactures and installs advanced conveyance systems that support the critical infrastructure needs of modern data centers,” the company said in a news release.

S.C. sees new jump in measles; it could get worse with holidays

Nationally, the measles case count is nearing 2,000 for a disease that has been considered eliminated in the U.S. Many of those cases are in South Carolina.

The new facility at 1014 Railroad Ave. in Springfield will focus on manufacturing conveyance systems engineered to integrate seamlessly with data center buildouts.
