GROVETOWN, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -- On the weekend of the Kentucky Derby, some sports fans in Augusta's eyes were on a derby of a different kind -- roller derby. It's not a commonly known sport by any means, but it drew the best of the sport to Columbia County.
The tournament, hosted by the Soul City Sirens, has so much interest, the team has to pick and chose who gets the chance to play.
In the sport, the goal is for the other team's jammer not to pass a group of blockers. And to score points, the jammer has to lap the other team. And while it's not something you'll see televised on the major networks, players say it gets pretty intense.
"It's exciting, it's thrilling, it's exhilarating," said Rachel Bridges of the Soul City Sirens. "You never know what you're going to see. There's some good hitting and good blocks, and hey, we're all here to see a wreck sometimes. It's like NASCAR. When we say derby's like a fire hose to the face it kind of is,"
They've got a boot camp coming up. You can sign up through the team's Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pg/soulcitysirensaugusta/about/?ref=page_internal
