Errors prove costly in 6-3 loss to Asheville

Saturday, April 6, 2019
ASHEVILLE, NC -- After the Augusta GreenJackets (Single-A Affiliate of the San Francisco Giants) scored first with two runs in the 2nd inning, the Asheville Tourists (Single-A Affiliate of the Colorado Rockies) responded by taking advantage of five GreenJackets errors the rest of the way and Asheville got a 6-3 win Saturday night.

The evening began positive for the GreenJackets after starter Jake Wong struck out the side in the 1st inning. In the 2nd inning, Augusta got an RBI single from Andres Angulo, and then a fielders choice RBI from Ismael Munguia to give the GreenJackets an early 2-0 lead. But in the home-half of the inning, Asheville took advantage of two Augusta errors.

After Jacob Gonzalez was unable to field a bunt cleanly, allowing the bases to load, Daniel Jipping drove one to the centerfield fence, scoring two runs. As the throw came in from the outfield, Augusta shortstop Shane Matheny threw the ball over his third baseman Gonzalez, into the Augusta dugout, allowing everyone to score, and making it a 4-2 lead for the Tourists.

Starter Jake Wong finished his night tossing just 1.2 innings, while allowing four runs, and three of them were earned as he couldn’t get out of the 2nd inning.

Asheville grabbed another run in the 3rd inning on a Daniel Montano sacrifice fly. In the 4th inning, the GreenJackets got that run back on a Jose Layer solo home run, his first of the year to make it 5-3. Layer had a double, single and home run through the first four innings. He finished his night going 3 for 4 with a run scored, RBI and a walk. Layer also made a leaping catch at the wall in the 8th to save, what would have been, extra bases for Terrin Vavra of Asheville.

In the 5th inning, the Tourists added one more to make it 6-3 on a Willie MacIver single, plating John Cresto. The GreenJackets committed three errors in the 7th inning, but Jesus Tona worked around it and did not allow a run.

In the 8th, Tyler Schimpf retired the side to keep the score at 6-3, but in the 9th inning, after Layer walked with two outs, Aaron Bond struck out to end the game. Jake Bird was the winning pitcher, while Jake Wong gets the loss. Alexander Martinez pick up the save for Asheville.
The GreenJackets go to 1-2 on the year while Asheville improves to 2-1.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Jose Layer, 3-4, 1B, 2B, HR, RBI, R, BB
After Jose Layer started the season 1-9, he broke out in a big way Saturday night, finishing a triple shy of the cycle. His night started off 3-3 before the end of the 4th inning. Layer also made the play of the year so far in 2019, as he jumped up and grabbed a fly-ball and lightly hit the centerfield fence.

TOMORROW: 2:05 pm @ McCormick Field (Asheville, North Carolina)
Seth Corry (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs Alfredo Garcia (0-0, 0.00 ERA)
Two southpaws take the hill in the series finale from McCormick Field. The 3rd Round pick out of high school in 2017, Seth Corry, makes his first start of the season for Augusta. Corry, ranked the #25 prospect in the Giants Organization, looks to get off on the right foot after he went 4-3 with a 3.59 ERA between Class-A “Short Season” Salem-Keizer and the Arizona League.

The Tourists will send out Alfredo Garcia, who went 2-5 with a 4.99 ERA in the Pioneer League last year for the Grand Junction Rockies in the Rookie League.
