AIKEN COUNTY, SC (WRDW/WAGT) – We’re getting our first look at the video that lead to the arrest of an Aiken County daycare employee accused of abusing children.
On April 23, the Aiken Department of Public Safety charged Markita Rainey with five counts of unlawful conduct towards a child.
In the video, you can see Rainey walk around the Sunshine House daycare. You hear kids crying, but you also see Rainey pick up a child with one arm, walk her toward a sleeping mat, then drop her on it.
She does it again to three other children.
Aiken DPS officials immediately notified parents after watching the videos.
“We want to make sure they know, the staff knows that way they can look for things, so if other things occur with their child, we can take the appropriate steps,”
Not only does Rainey toss kids onto the mats, you can also see her reach across a table and hit a child.
Aiken DPS says in any case, especially one like Rainey’s, video can be a big help.
"So obviously being able to review that for us helps us either proceed the path we did where charges are filed or if there's accusation, the video would obviously show that it didn't occur and it exonerates this person,”
The Sunshine House did fire Rainey and another employee for not reporting Rainey’s actions.
For now, Rainey is out on bond, but her next court date is in June.
