COLUMBIA COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -- If you've been down William Few Parkway lately, you'll see and hear some big changes. Construction has kicked off at two new places for parents to take their kids in Columbia County.
"At first it was a shock just because I didn't know how fast it was coming, but we've been seeing signs," said Brandi Barlow.
Brandi Barlow is a personal trainer at the Patriots Park Gym, where right outside crews are clearing, cutting, and grading 25 acres of land.
"People drive by and they're surprised by the scope and the size of how large it is," said Division Director Community & Leisure Services John Luton.
The expansion at Patriots Park is adding four new soccer fields, but it's fixing an even bigger problem.
"If you've ever been to Patriots Park on a busy night, there's a lot of bottleneck, a lot of parking on curbs."
Crews are adding another entrance to the park off William Few Parkway. There are also plans for around 300 more parking spaces at the park.
"It's gonna be nice having more of the parking, more parks. It gets really packed out here especially with soccer, baseball. "
But Patriots Park isn't the only improvement. A brand new park is in the works off exit 190, near Grovetown.
"It's sort of going to look like Evans Towne Center Park, with an open meadow for passive recreation and then a large playground."
We're told both projects should be done this fall.
Columbia County is also making some improvements behind Lakeside High and Middle Schools, and there will be another park added across from Evans Towne Center Park.
