AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) -- A family is struggling after a fire broke out at their home Thursday.
It happened on the 200 block of Merriweather Drive, in Graniteville, around 2:00 p.m.
One person was at the home at the time the fire broke out, but they weren't injured and no one else was inside.
Now, the mother and five children who lived in that home are struggling after losing everything.
"I just keep letting them know there's light at the end of the tunnel," Brientley Bass, the mother, said. "We're going to get through this. We have each other."
The Clearwater community is springing in to action already, making a dark situation a little brighter for the Bass family.
"I brought some clothing items and some toys," Clearwater Elementary School teacher Kristen Still said. "I have two boys that have actually just outgrown those sizes."
It's a community where people like Still feel the pain of others and expresses its empathy through helping.
"I felt compelled to donate today because I remember when I was in 5th grade, our house actually caught fire and burned down right after Christmas," teacher Crystal Oerman said.
That empathy led to community members filling the Clearwater Elementary School library with donations in just a few short hours.
"I was not expecting to see so much items or even anything all," Bass said. "It was definitely overwhelming. Good emotions, though."
