(CNN) -- Days before entering the U.S. Senate, Mitt Romney is lashing out against President Trump.

Romney wrote a piece for the Washington Post saying the president's behavior during his presidency, particularly his conduct in recent weeks shows that he has not "risen to the mantle of the office."

Romney went on to write that a president should unite Americans, demonstrate honesty and integrity, and elevate the national discourse with respect.

Trump's campaign manager tore into Romney on Twitter.

Brad Parscale wrote that Romney lacked the ability to "save the nation". He also tweeted "jealousy is a drink best served warm and Romney just proved it."

President Trump has also sent out a tweet Wednesday morning, saying he "would much prefer that Mitt focus on Border Security and so many other things where he can be helpful. I won big, and he didn’t. He should be happy for all Republicans. Be a TEAM player & WIN!"

Romney lost the 2012 presidential election to former President Obama.
