(WRDW/WAGT) – Monday we will celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Events are being held across the CSRA to honor him throughout the weekend.
Here’s a list of events for families to attend.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Celebration – Augusta University Summerville
AU’s Summerville campus is hosting a nationally recognized actor, motivational speaker and author to speak to a crowd in celebration of Dr. King. Monti Washington will be the keynote speaker on Friday, January 18th at 12:00 p.m. Washington had many setbacks in life, but still moved forward and earned two college degrees, become a McDonalds All-American nominee, and be the co-founder of Truality.org. Truality is a non-profit organization aimed at inspiring youth to be TRU The Real U.
This event is being held at the Maxwell Theater on AU Summerville’s campus.
MLK, Jr., Parade – Augusta
The NAACP Augusta branch is putting on the annual MLK parade on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. The viewing area will be along Laney Walker Boulevard, in front of Laney Stadium.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration – Emanuel County
This event, “Never lose Hope, Unity Wins”, will be held on Sunday and Monday at 6:00 p.m. at St. Phillips Missionary Baptist Church. That’s located at 230 South Racetrack Street, in Swainsboro.
The parade will be held on Monday at 1:00 p.m., beginning at the 4-H Club House on Pratt Avenue.
Martin Luther King National Day of Service – Augusta
In celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life, vision, and commitment to the causes of both civil rights and public service, on Monday starting at 9:00 a.m., United Way of the CSRA’s AmeriCorps VISTA’s will come together with residents and organizations to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by volunteering in the community.
AmeriCorps VISTA members will serve by collecting, sorting, and eventually distributing emergency hygiene kits to the homeless, elderly, and families of the Richmond County School system who may be experiencing the effects of poverty. United Way expects the service project will serve over 1,500 households.
33rd Annual Celebration of MLK – Augusta
Augusta Chorale will be the guest choir at this event, held Monday at 12:00 p.m. at Good Shepherd Baptist Church. The community is invited to this free event.
