COLUMBIA COUNTY, GA (WRDW) -- An Augusta firefighter is charged with murder. Charles Sconyers is accused in the death of his one-year-old son.
The child's home was quiet. When News 12 went to the scene, no one was home. Neighbors say on May 1, the area was still as they prayed for the child and his family after they learned what happened.
Edgecliff Lane is a quiet street. So quiet, you can hear birds chirping or a neighbor taking the dog for a walk.
"I just don't think I can even come up with any words," said Bryan Rogers, of Edgecliff Lane. He lives just a few houses down from where it all happened.
Rogers was speechless after hearing his neighbors' child died.
"I got home, went to go take out the trash, just doing my thing and noticed an ambulance coming in on my road," said Rogers, describing May 1.
As the ambulance pulled away from the home on the 500 block of Edgecliff Lane, Rogers stood and watched from his own home.
"I was concerned," said Rogers. "I noticed a few other emergency vehicles coming and everyone was standing out with their hand on their heart, concerned."
The child inside the ambulance, Lincoln Davitte, would not return home.
"A lady down the street told me she heard a little boy had bumped his head or something." said Rogers.
The Columbia County Sheriff's Office says Charles Sconyers picked up his girlfriend's nearly-two-year-old son Lincoln on May 1 from daycare, brought him home, and let him play in the yard. Sconyers told investigators he heard a scream and found Lincoln face down and tried to help.
CCSO says that's not actually what happened.
Sconyers is a firefighter now charged with murder.
"Those are people you can trust at the most dire times, you know?" said Rogers.
The coroner says the child died from head injuries but exactly how, CCSO won't say. The child's autopsy isn't finished by the GBI just yet so an exact cause of death hasn't been released yet. We do know hospital staff reported that the child's injuries seemed suspicious.
The Augusta-Richmond County Fire Department has not released if Sconyers still has his job yet. They weren't aware of the charges against Sconyers until News 12 told them. We'll let you know if his employment status changes.
An Augusta firefighter is charged with murder in the death of a toddler.
According to a release from the Columbia County Sheriff's Office, On May 1, Charles Sconyers picked up his girlfriend's 1-year-old son from daycare.
They returned to his girlfriend's home, according to the report, and Sconyers, who has been identified as a Richmond County firefighter says he heard a scream before he found the child face down on the patio.
Sconyers told investigators he gave emergency aid to the child until EMT's arrived.
But the sheriff's office says that's not what happened. They are not releasing what they believe happened or how the child died, but Sconyers is charged with murder.
The boy, according to investigators, was only a few weeks away from turning 2 years old.
