ORANGEBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) – According to the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office, a man wanted for sexual and physical assault has been arrested.
25-year-old Michael Corbitt has been charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct, kidnapping, first-degree assault and battery, and carjacking.
Deputies were first notified by witnesses on September 23 that a woman was seen lying in a road after being beaten inside of a vehicle.
Witnesses told deputies that they stopped to help the victim after they saw the victim scream and signal for help. The witnesses say they could see the victim was injured.
When the witnesses tried to help, Corbit yelled at them and told them to leave. However, the victim was thrown from the vehicle when witnesses tried to help.
The victim had several injuries including a bloody lip and face, swollen eye and cheeks, and a bite mark on the hand.
When deputies spoke to the victim, the victim said it all began when Corbitt hit her during an argument they had.
The victim stated Corbitt drove them to a road outside of Springfield and began beating her.
According to the warrant, Corbitt sexually assaulted the victim during the incident.
After Corbitt drove to a convenience store, the victim jumped into the driver’s seat. As she attempted to leave, the male jumped onto the hood of the vehicle. The victim tried to continue driving but she didn’t want to put Corbitt’s life in danger so she stopped.
Once back in the vehicle, he began punching the victim in the face, head, and stomach.
During the bond hearing, the victim stated she wanted them to drop the charges. The judge denied the motion and bond was set at $16,000.
