RICHMOND COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – More information on the standoff between SWAT and a suspect Wednesday night in Augusta has been released by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

RCSO Investigators attempted to execute arrest warrants on 34-year-old Marcus Gifford at a residence on the 500 block of Blum Street.

Once it was confirmed that Gifford was inside of the residence, they asked him to come outside but he refused. Investigators learned that Gifford was in possession of a firearm and refused to allow two children, ages two-years-old and two-months old, to leave the residence.

The SWAT team quickly responded and began negotiations. Gifford released the children separately but continued to make threats towards deputies. He fired several shots at them when they attempted to enter the residence.

After further attempts were taken to safely get Gifford out of the home, Gifford later surrendered and he was taken into custody on outstanding warrants for Possession of MDMA with Intent to Distribute and Possession of Cocaine with Intent to Distribute.

He was later charged with Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer, False Imprisonment, Cruelty to Children in 1st Degree, Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Crime, and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.

No injuries were reported.
