Investigation begins after fire kills 63-year-old and 16-year-old early Thursday morning

EMANUEL COUNTY, GA (WRDW/WAGT) -- A fire that killed a 63-year-old and a 16-year-old is now under investigation in Emanuel County.

According to the Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner's office, that fire happened at a residence on Claxton Avenue in Swainsboro around 3 a.m. Thursday.

“The home was built in 1961 and was around 700 square-feet. The fire is believed to have started in the kitchen. Due to the extensive damage from the blaze, a cause has not been determined and this case remains
under investigation,” said Safety Fire Commissioner Jim Beck. “No smoke detectors were found in the home.”

Two adults managed to escape the home and were treated for smoke inhalation.

The 63-year-old, identified as Irwin Woods, was found dead inside the home alongside the 16-year-old.

The fire remains under investigation by the Swainsboro Police Department, fire department, and the Emanuel County Sheriff's Office.
