AUGUSTA, GA (WRDW/WAGT) -- In the aftermath of a devastating fire that destroyed the Windsor Heights Baptist Church on Thursday, church members went back to the scene to collect what was left from inside.
Laneith Schwalbauch, who says she and her husband have been going to the church for decades, was one of the several who considered Windsor Heights a home.
"We'd come over here and do different kinds of work, and work in the yard, and we'd have work days on Saturdays," she said.
Schwalbauch was told that four Bibles were found among the rubble, so she decided to go out to take a look for herself.
"It was my Bible and my husband's Bible. My friend that sat right behind me, sweet German lady, it was her Bible," she said.
Along with the Bibles, the church's steeple and three crosses survived. While it won't bring back the church, at least Schwalbauch has something to hold onto.
"We always say He closes one door and opens another one," she said.
