Former Aiken NAACP president Philip Howell dies from illness

AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) -- The Aiken County NAACP is mourning one its former president.

Philip Howell died Saturday from complications of an illness, according to the Aiken County chapter. Howell served as president for six years.

The Aiken County NAACP released the following statement:

The entire NAACP community mourns this loss. On behalf of our Executive Committee and Branch members, we extend our deepest sympathies to Philip’s family. Philip was the first white president of an NAACP Branch in South Carolina—serving for six years. He brought an amazing vigor to serving the underserved and fighting for equality in Aiken and the surrounding region.

A memorial will be held on Thursday at 630 p.m. at the City of Aiken Municipal Building.
