AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Five days, but no answers about who shot and killed a man while he was sitting in a car outside an Augusta liquor store. Friday night, family and friends of 34-year-old James Sims III, known by friends as Jermel, came together at his Alma Mater, Josey High School to remember him.
He was a friend, a son, a father, and so much more to so many people. The class of 2000 Josey grad touched many lives, and hundreds came out to say goodbye. "This is a small city but this city is in mourning. We have lost a great kind hearted person," Jermel's friend Monique Rose said.
Hundreds filled the bleachers at Josey High School Friday night, the same ones many sat in to watch Jermel play years ago. "You know he was always about unity and keeping up tradition," Rose said.
Jermel played basketball and football at Josey, he graduated sixteen years ago, but remained involved. "He took care of us, he took care of us. He was a genuine person with a heart of gold, we need more people like that," she said.
Memories that help light this dark time for his loved ones. Jermel was shot and killed Monday night "I was at home in my kitchen and I'll never forget that day," Rose said.
A man known for giving, that's how Deloise Perkins remembers him. When she could not afford for her son to play basketball he stepped up. "He said when you get half, I'll pay the other half. And he did. He helped my son play traveling basketball," Perkins said.
He leaves behind his own children, and all the lives he touched. "The place he had in the community, he was nice to everybody, he would help anybody," Perkins said.
Now, friends and family hold on to the good times, and the promises they made. "He said man you make sure that boy goes to college, and that's my promise to him," she said. "I'm heartbroken today but I know that he's watching me. I have peace knowing that it's going to be okay," Rose said.
So far there have not been any arrests in this case. The Richmond County Sheriff's Office is asking anyone with any information to come forward.
