AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- The Richmond County Sheriff's Office have arrested the attempted burglary suspect who was shot by the person living in the apartment he was trying to break into.

Deputies say at 3:14 Thursday morning, Jefferson Clement removed screens to several apartments at the Woodlake Club Apartments on Amli Way near Augusta West Parkway. They say Clement was unable to slide them up because they were locked.

Investigators say Clement was able to open the window at one apartment and began looking inside through the window. The resident was awakened when Clement climbed through the window. Deputies say while Clement was climbing back through, the person fired two shots with a .380 handgun.

Deputies say Clement was hit one time in the right thigh. He ran back to his home and was taken to Doctor's Hospital by an unknown means of transportation.

The Sheriff's Office says they were called by ER personnel at 4:04 a.m. in reference to the gunshot wound.

Clement is charged with four counts of criminal attempted burglary.
