Augusta, Ga--The Kirby Smart we've gotten to know at Georgia is a firery coach that's also a family man that has kids. What most don't know, his older brother Karl, has quite the story and he was in Augusta Friday talking about it.
Karl Smart is a cancer survivor. At age 15 he was diagnosed with leukemia. After three and a half years of treatment, he beat it. Smart is still active in talking to those battling cancer and other ailments, thus his journey to Augusta and the Georgia Cancer Center. While his fight was tough, Karl also knows Kirby make a lot of sacrifices growing up as well.
"All of my family, we worked together as a team, as families do. You know, Kirby had to stay with friends when my parents and I would go to the hospital to get treatment for weeks at a time. So everyone was put out, my sister had to stay with family and friends"
Both are very involved in Camp Sunshine as Kirby knows what it's like to grow up with a brother battling cancer, especially when they're just a kid.
