News 12 This Morning
EVANS, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -- An Evans couple has been married for more than five decades and they say they're still going strong.
The pair is retired now and do everything together, but they tell News 12 their love story hasn't always been this easy.
"Together Again," exclaims Virginia and David Evans.
The couple got married before the days of tablets and flat screens. They said their vows back when gas was less than a dollar and Buck Owens wrote the hit, "Together Again."
"We were together again after he came from Vietnam, or if he'd have to go to the field for two or three weeks and then he'd come home," Virginia took us through the years. "That was our song, we were together again."
Each decade the music world grew and so did their bond.
"She's definitely my best friend. She's the love of my life," David told us.
Together they've seen it all. From the highs of first dates and love notes, to the lows of war.
"This is the car we had on our first date. If you know anything about Corvairs there's not too much room in them, and as I said on our wedding night. I was in the back seat curled up and he was in the front seat," Virginia explains.
The Vietnam War changed things for both of them. David was shipped out while Virginia feared for her love while stateside.
"I just felt like my world would end if he didn't come back. We wrote letters every day."
They've experienced every little thing in between their highs and lows, and they say they wouldn't change a bit.
"We are totally opposite in some ways. He has the patience of job, and I have none so we get along pretty well that way," Virginia adds.
For them, life is a song and their love is the rhythm.
"I still love her. Always have, always will. And if our wedding vows say 'til death do us part, that's the way it is."
A 1964 Chevy Corvair still sits in the garage as a reminder of their time together. It's the car the couple rode in on their first date. Their daughter surprised them on Christmas a few years ago with the car. They say it's brought back so many memories.
