AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -- From darkness to light the Miller Theater is alive again.

Symphony Orchestra Augusta staff and the Miller Theater staff turned the Miller Theater Marquee on with just a flip of a switch.

The Miller Theater is now home to Symphony Orchestra Augusta, and just months away from opening its doors.

Executive Director of Symphony Orchestra Augusta Anne Catherine Murray said, "We could not be anymore thrilled we have waited for this for so long, so many people have worked so hard for years and years the community has been so generous so to be able to light this marquee tonight is a symbol of all this hard work."

More than 30 years after it went dark, downtown Augusta is bringing back the Miller, creating it's own Theater District.

General Mager of the Miller Theater Marty Elliott said, "To be in a place where we have the imperial and now the miller and the bell we have this arts district its just incredible."

The renovations cost 23 million dollars, and with that money they were able to restore the pieces that define the theater.

"Everything from literally floor to ceiling and as many things as possible were what we would call reanimated," said Elliott.

The pieces that could not be restored were made even better.

"Touring artists are going to love to play this house where we have moving lights, we have the best sound system with 1300 seats and the way this house was built the acoustics are phenomenal," said Elliott.

It's a piece of Augusta history dating back to 1939, and now almost 80 years later, they're writing a new chapter.

"When we officially open in January I think we will realize our dream has come true," said Murray.

The doors to the Miller Theater officially open on January 6th for their Opening Night Gala, but tickets for that are already sold out.

On January 7th the Miller will have an open house for everyone in the community to come and walk through the newly renovated Miller Theater.
