Student charged after trying to hit teacher

HARLEM, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -- A 16-year-old is being held at Regional Youth Detention Center, in Augusta, after allegedly trying to hit a teacher.

According to the Columbia County Sheriff's Office, a Harlem High School teacher says the student became upset and started yelling when they were asked to leave the classroom. The student then sat on the floor screaming.

Another teacher stepped in to help calm thes tudent down, but when they approached the student swung at them. Neither teacher was hit.

The student has been charged with simple assault on a school official, and has been sent to the detention center.
