AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT)--Darrell Brown won't be spending anymore time on the playground at Trinity Manor. Two months ago Brown died after being accidentally shot by his Uncle. Today his uncle Terrance Brown is facing one count of involuntary manslaughter and one count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
"We heard several gunshots that day. We thought it was somebody that shot up in the air," neighbor Firmberly Sutton said.
"I didn't know it was a child until one of the neighbors told me it was a child."
Sutton lives in the neighborhood behind Trinity Manor. She lives close enough to feel a connection to what happened.
She lives close enough to feel connected to Darnell Brown and his family.
"It could've been one of my kids. That's how I took it." Sutton went on, "We all parents out here. We're all single parents.
We're all struggling and all of us need to come together as one to keep the community safe."
The community on Barton Chapel road is one that's all too familiar to the sound gunfire Sutton told News 12.
"Gunshots go off everywhere." Sutton says, "But no one is expecting anyone to get shot, not a child getting killed."
Well, a child did get killed. He walked around in the Trinity Manor neighborhood. He went to school at Barton Chapel Elementary.
He lived in building four.
After finding out the charges that Darrell's uncle, Terrance Brown, is facing Sutton shook her head in disbelief.
"That's a child...that was an innocent child."
While she and her neighbors won't forget the little eight-year-old boy, Terrance Brown isn't very far from her thoughts either.
"I am just praying that they--that they have mercy on his soul."
