UPDATE: Driver killed in propane truck crash on HWY 56

BURKE COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT)-- A propane truck crash on Highway 56 turned deadly, Burke County Sheriff's Office says.

James William Odom, 65, died after officials say they believe he had a "medical emergency" on the road. The initial investigation shows the truck left the roadway for an extended period, deputies tell News 12 there were no signs of the brakes being applied.

Highway 56 South was closed in both directions due to the crash until about 9:30 p.m.

The sheriff's office and fire rescue teams were at the scene approximately half a mile south of Edmund Burke Academy, where they were working to extricate the driver.

The Georgia Department of Transportation also responded to the accident.

Further investigation will take place over the next few days.
