UPDATE | Crews hit gas line causing major leak on Furys Ferry Road

MARTINEZ, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -- Construction crews building a new senior living facility on Furys Ferry Road hit a gas line causing a major leak, fire officials say.

Chief Ray Blessing with the Columbia County Fire Department said contractors were digging for a water line when they accidentally hit a four inch gas line near the West Lake subdivision.

This lead to the closure of Furys Ferry Road between the Pass and Evans to Locks Road for a few hours while crew tried to fix the leak.

Chief Blessing said some homes were evacuated as a precaution.

MARTINEZ, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -- A spokesperson with Columbia County says a portion of Furys Ferry Road between The Pass and Evans to Locks Road will be closed for approximately two more hours for a gas leak.

Six homes along Fury's Ferry Road have been evacuated for precautionary reasons, and the entrances to Forest Creek and West Lake are currently closed.

A spokesperson with Columbia County said that crews are currently on scene assessing the situation and working on fixing the leak.

MARTINEZ, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -- A portion of Furys Ferry Road from Evans to Locks Road to The Pass is currently closed due to a gas leak.

News 12 NBC 26 has learned residents in the Forest Creek subdivision are being evacuated from the area at this time. This is the only subdivision reportedly being evacuated currently.
