AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT)-- What's more annoying than a telemarketer calling during dinner? How about a call from a robot? If you live in Augusta then you are more likely to get robocalls. The city ranks 20th in the nation for the most robocalls.
Joyce Baker's phone rings every day and all day. "I don't understand why they keep calling," Baker said. She gets at least eight robocalls a day. "They keep calling you constantly and constantly all the time very irritating makes me want to turn off my phone and cut my home phone off because it bothers me," Baker said.
Baker isn't only one fighting the urge to throw her phone when she gets a call. "It's a huge problem! Our estimate is over 14 billion robocalls so far this year alone," says Alex Quilici, CEO of YouMail. Quilici knows a lot about robocalls. He sells a product to businesses to get rid of the calls.
Bill collectors and scammers get your number when you apply for a loan or sign up for a contest. It's often a little check box many people don't notice. "Treat your phone number as generally something you want to keep very private. It won't eliminate everything but it will help," he advises. It also helps not to pick up the phone. "The minute they put you on the phone they're going to put you on a list says hey this is a live one and keep calling," Quilici said.
The Do Not Call List doesn't block robocalls. However, the FCC has given phone companies permission to use robocall blocking technology, like YouMail.
