AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) -- A North Augusta man is dead following a single-car crash on Jefferson Davis Highway Saturday night.

In a news release, Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton says 79-year-old Harold Lanier was driving a 2002 Chevrolet pickup truck north near Sudlow Lake Road and Jefferson Davis Highway when the truck left the roadway and went down a small ravine. Witnesses say the truck was swerving before leaving the road.

Carlton says the crash happened around 7:16 p.m. Saturday night. Lanier was transported to Augusta University Medical Center, but was later pronounced dead.

It is not clear at this time whether Lanier died from the crash or was having a medical event. Carlton says an autopsy is scheduled for Monday in Newberry, South Carolina.
