UPDATE | Five injured after multi-car crash on State Route 10 in Wilkes County

WILKES COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -- New details are being released after an accident shut down State Route 10 for hours on Monday.

According to Georgia State Patrol, a Ford Explorer was traveling east on State Route 10 towards Washington. The driver told investigators he fell asleep and crossed the centerline. His Explorer then side-swiped a Honda, which was traveling towards Athens. After impact, the Explorer rotated counter-clockwise slightly and struck a Chevrolet Suburban head-on. Both accidents occurred on the westbound lane of State Route 10.

The driver of the Ford Explorer was taken by Air-Life to Augusta University Medical Center. All four occupants in the Suburban were taken by Wilkes County EMS to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center. The driver of the Honda was not injured.

One of the occupants of the suburban is currently in surgery at Piedmont Athens. Investigators are not releasing any names at this time.

WILKES COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -- A multi-car accident is blocking all lanes on State Route 10 in Wilkes County past Calloway Road.

According to GDOT, three cars were involved in the accident. Five people were injured, but thankfully there were no fatalities.

GDOT is estimating the accident will be cleared and the road will reopen by about 10 a.m.
