AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -- The Augusta Utilities Department has said significant rainfall on Sept. 2, has caused highly diluted wastewater to begin running out of the box at the end of the wastewater collection system into Butler Creek.

The significant amount of rainfall from Tropical Storm Hermine brought four to five inches of rain and caused 1,628,000 gallons of highly diluted wastewater to leak. The overflow was corrected within 12 hours.

Augusta has previously identified projects that are needed in order to remove significant amounts of rainwater from the wastewater collection system. These projects are in various stages of design and implementation. Augusta has begun monitoring of Butler Creek as required by Georgia EPD.
