News 12 First at Five

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -- Tournament play is in full swing and more patrons are flying in to watch at Augusta National.

Normally the tower at Daniel Field is empty but because of all the patrons coming in for the Masters they've hired Airboss Inc. to man the tower.

One after another, planes are landing and taking off at Bush Field and at Daniel Field.

“Wednesday was busy, very busy and yesterday Thursday was even busier so we were all jammed up over here," said George.

This week, George and his team of air traffic controllers have taken over the tower at Daniel Field.

“We're all retired FAA controllers, so we're all still certified," said George.

They've been brought in to monitor the heavy traffic as patrons hit the ground and head to the course.

“It expedites the arrivals and departures out of here otherwise its one in and one out especially with iffy-weather like this, so we can help them get in here quicker and help them get out quicker than they normally could," said George.

Three people work this tower at all times. Together they are telling pilots when to take off and land and talking to the tower at Bush Field.

Controllers at Bush Field tell them when an airplane is headed their way.

“They give them to us and what we're doing is landing and departing here for the airport," said George.

It's a busy week for both airports but George and his team say they wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

“We like working traffic, it's fun,” said George.

Airboss Inc. will be manning the tower here at Daniel Field until Sunday making sure planes are taking off and landing safely.

Augusta Regional expects traffic to be heavy through the weekend so make sure if you are heading to the airport you get there about 3 hours before your flight.
