TWIN CITY, Ga. (WRDW/WTOC) -- The Emanuel County Coroner confirms to News 12 one man has died after drowning in a private pond off of Durden Road.

Deputy Coroner Randy Love says the victim, 55-year-old Alfred Leonard Allen of Rex, Ga., was attempting to teach an 11-year-old girl how to row a boat on a private pond.

Officials say the girl got too far out on the pond, so Allen jumped in to swim to her. Allen reportedly made it halfway before drowning due to extremely cold water, according to the Deputy Coroner Randy Love.

The call came in at 2:15 p.m. on Sunday. The Emanuel County Sheriff's Office, Twin City Fire, Emanuel County EMS, Burke County EMA Dive Team, and Georgia DNR assisted in the recovery of the victim.

The child in the boat managed to return safely to shore, Savannah CBS affiliate WTOC reported.
