AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -- The Richmond County Sheriff's Office has arrested a man at an Augusta home for the neglect of his elderly mother.

54-year-old John Henry Ray was arrested at a home on the 2400 block of Ridge Road on Thursday.

An Adult Protective Services report was filed by an employee at Family Medicine Associates of Augusta. The employee says he was concerned over the wellbeing of 78-year-old Sarah Ray.

The employee says Sarah was always covered in feces and urine when she visited the medical facility. He says he has spoken to her son, Jon Ray, about his concerns about the living situation. He says multiple animals reside in the home, and defecate inside.

When deputies arrived at the home, they say a strong odor was present as soon as the front door was opened. They say it was difficult to walk through the home to avoid dog feces or urine.

Sarah Roy is physically disabled, and cannot get around on her own. Her other son has taken her in to live with him.

Jon Ray is being held at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center in Augusta.
