Local artist painting Augusta with bold and bright murals

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -- The city of Augusta is getting a lot brighter these days from yarn bombs, to public art, to large scale painted murals. A local artist is making it her mission to add a lot of color to Augusta.

When people ask what April King does for a living, she tells them she's an artist.

"It's so funny how color can just make something so much better," said April King.

No, this isn't a part time gig. She's a self-taught, full-time artist, and you can see her work across the CSRA.

"It's just like when you see a house with a painted door and you're like, 'Oh that looks really cute, someone cares about that place. They take pride in that,'" explained King.

King takes pride in Augusta. This is her hometown, but her work didn't start out on this large of a scale.

"It started with wanting to do public art for the city and doing something small because I was nervous about it," explained King, "I didn't want it to be too loud or too big."

You may remember the tiny doors that started popping up in Augusta. That's how it all started. Now, her art is displayed at places like SRP Park and the iconic Sno-Cap.

"It's really fun to do this project too because so many people are connected to this place," said King.

Creating murals take time. She starts with a stencil and outlines what the mural will look like.

"We come back the next day and fill it all in," said King.

In the end, you get something that's perfect for you next Instagram picture.

"That's just a nice feeling to know in your town that people care about where they're eating or where they're shopping," said King.
