AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -- Her name is known across the CSRA after her tragic story went public: Janell Carwell. The teen who went missing in Feb. 2017 would have celebrated her 18th birthday Wednesday, April 17th.

Janell Carwell went missing 11 months before her body was found buried off Golden Camp Road in March 2018. Her disappearance and murder rocked the community.

“The community has embraced this case like Janell was their own child,” Sheriff Richard Roundtree said after finding the remains.

Janell's mother and step-father, Tanya and Leon Tripp, have been charged in the teen's murder. Both plead not guilty in 2018.

Sheriff Roundtree believes there is no doubt that Tanya and Leon Tripp are responsible for Janell's death, but there are still some questions left unanswered.

Leon is charged with Capital Murder, Kidnapping with Bodily Injury, Cruelty to Children, and Concealing Janell's death. He will be tried for the death penalty.

Tanya is charged with 2nd Degree Murder, Concealing a Death, and Hindering the Apprehension of a Fugitive. Deputies say she knew where Leon was when he was wanted in her daughter's disappearance.

Both cases are moving forward in the court system.
