UPDATE | One dead after shooting in Appling

APPLING, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -- Columbia County deputies say one person is dead after an overnight shooting in Appling.

Deputies say at 12:28 am they were called out to Old Lincolnton Road in reference to a shooting. Once on scene they found Darrell Gossett outside an enclosed front porch deceased with gunshot wounds to the chest.

According to law enforcement, Jason Christopher Wheeler and Crystal Laurie Russ were detained at the scene.

Deputies say Wheeler told them he shot Gossett, his uncle, in self defense. A handgun was recovered inside the home.

After Wheeler shot Gossett he called 911 to report the shooting. No charges have been filed at this point, according to a press release.

APPLING, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -- Investigators are on the scene of a shooting on the 4200 block of Old Lincolnton Road in Appling.

We're working to confirm how many victims there were and details about the shooter. We're learning it was a domestic incident.

Columbia County dispatch said the call came in around 12:28 a.m. Tuesday. EMS was called to the scene.
