UPDATE | 2 arrested after gun allegedly seen on Aiken High School campus

5:45 p.m.

AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) -- Aiken Public Safety has released the charges for two teen accused in a disturbance at Aiken High School Monday afternoon.

Eugene Simmons III, 17, has been charged with disturbing schools, trespassing, and failure to comply with a public safety officer, and Desmond Bates, 17, has been charged with disturbing schools, public safety said.

At about 1:50 p.m., the two suspects listed above were involved in a dispute with an Aiken High student in the front parking lot of the school.

Several witness to the incident stated they saw Simmons armed with a pistol. Those witnesses immediately reported their observations to the school resource officer. The SRO immediately moved to challenge and identify the suspect, according to Aiken public Safety.

When approached by the SRO, Simmons allegedly fled the parking lot on foot and ran away from the school towards Rutland Drive.

The suspect was located and placed into custody by the SRO and responding officers on Rutland Drive just off the Aiken High Campus. Officers said they're continuing to search for the firearm believed to have been discarded by Simmons as he fled the scene.

More charges may be forth coming.

4:50 p.m.

AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) -- Two suspects have been taken into custody after an incident at Aiken High School involving a gun.

A former student, Eugene Simmons, and a current student, Desmond Bates, have been arrested. Investigators said they believe Eugene Simmons had a gun on campus.

Both suspects have been taken to the detention center. The gun has not been recovered.

2:54 p.m.

AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) -- A former Aiken High School student has been taken into custody after public safety said he was seen on campus with a gun.

According to Lt. Jake Mahoney, students told the school resource officer they thought he might have a gun. The SRO approached him and he ran to Rutland Drive, away from campus. The former student was caught near the baseball field on Rutland Drive.

The incident happened around 1:40 p.m. No one was injured.
