AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -- For people whose sleep affects their health, this could be a lifesaver.

It's called "Inspire," and the first person in our area had it surgically implanted last month. She will finally be able to test it tonight. We were there when doctors activated it.

Think pacemaker for snoring! It treats sleep apnea, which has been associated with cardiovascular strokes, diabetes, depression, and heart problems. The machine will deliver constant and steady air pressure.

The woman had it implanted is looking forward to getting some sleep.

"I'm really excited because, really, I was only getting four hours of sleep at night," said Lottie Davis. "I'm always up and down, but hopefully this will help."

The doctors will now offer this to more people in our area who need help with sleep apnea.

The device is supposed to last 7 years.
