AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -- Just three weeks before Christmas, Virginia College in Augusta announced it would be shutting its doors, leaving faculty without jobs and students unsure of their future.

The school lost its accreditation, and students say they're feeling blindsided and confused.

As soon as people started hearing Virginia College would be closing, the phones at Helms College started ringing off the hook. Helms College officials say they want students to know there's a school across town that wants to help.

"They were really scared," said Dr. Gary Markowitz, Senior Vice President of Education. "Their biggest concern is, will they be able to complete their college education or are they gonna be left out,"

Dr. Markowitz says Helms College is waiting on guidance from the Department of Education.

"We want to make sure we can help the students," said Dr. Markowitz. "We're in the same community. We want to make sure they can complete their education,"

Starting on Monday, December 10, they say they'll start reviewing transcripts and financial aid packages so Virginia College students can have a chance at finishing their degree.

But a lot of that is in the government's hands.

"We need guidance and approval to be able to graduate those students under Helms even though they may have only gone for a short period of time," said Dr. Markowitz. "So the students don't lose the credits, still graduate and still work in their field,"

Up for consideration for soon to be graduates is the 'teach out' method. Helms College would help some students finish up, but their degrees could still be from Virginia College.

"The quarter begins in January, not tomorrow," said Dr. Markowitz. "So we have time to plan appropriately to serve the students,"

But above all, he wants students to know:

"It will be okay, we are gonna help you," said Dr. Markowitz.

Helms College is holding informational sessions for students interested in continuing their education there on Monday, December 10, 2018. They're planning to hold them at 9:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m. in their conference center.

The Georgia Institute of Cosmetology also says they want to help students and staff impacted by Virginia College's closure. If you're interested, you can call 706-855-0010 ext 22.
