NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - A huge fire left the USC Aiken Men's Baseball team on the side of the road last night.
The vehicle destroyed. But coach Kenny Thomas ("Coach T" as his players call him) says they avoided the real tragedy.
"Everybody was safe. And everybody got home last night," he Told News 12.
While his squad is trying to pick up the pieces and regroup, another team is springing into action.
"We wanted to see how we could help, and help as quickly as possible," said Brandon Greene, GM of the Augusta GreenJackets.
When USC Aiken plays Augusta University at SRP Park on March 28th, a dollar of every ticket sold will go towards the Pacers.
"Just besides the ticket donation we're going to take part in, we're also going to have different fundraisers set up here, at the game," Greene told News 12.
Greene says this one hits close to home. They have members of their staff who know current players at USCA.
"[They said] they lost everything from keys to personal items, to uniforms," Greene said.
They're still working on how they can raise as much as possible for the team.
"We're obviously thinking about you guys," Greene said in a message to the Pacers. "We hope everything gets back to normal as soon as possible."
Meanwhile, Coach Thomas and his Pacers are staying positive, with spirits just as fiery as the blaze they faced Sunday."
"We might be fielding ground balls with someone else's glove," an impassioned Coach T said. "I don't know. I just don't know--I haven't figured that out yet. But I will tell you one thing. We're not backing down. This ain't stopping us."
