EMANUEL COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -- The suspect shot by deputies after a multi-county chase on I-16 eastbound has been identified.

The Emanuel County Sheriff's Office has identified the suspect as Larry Eugene Jones, 57, from Orlando, Florida.

According to Emanuel County Sheriff J. Tyson Stephens, deputies from the Treutlen County Sheriff's Office intercepted a bobtailed tractor trailer truck previously reported stolen in neighboring Laurens County on Interstate 16 traveling eastbound around 3:45 p.m.

Treutlen deputies attempted to initiate a traffic stop on the vehicle, but Jones refused to stop. The pursuit led into Emanuel County, where additional units joined in to assist. Stop sticks were deployed and the truck eventually came to a stop near mile marker 92, law enforcement said.

After stopping, Jones pulled out a handgun, which led deputies to fire shots, hitting Jones, according to a police report. Jones was airlifted to Savannah where he remains hospitalized for treatment. No officers were injured during the pursuit.

Upon Jones release from the hospital or being medically cleared, Jones will be transferred to the Emanuel County Jail to face felony charges of aggravated assault on a Peace Officer, terroristic Threats and Acts, obstruction of an officer, and theft by receiving stolen property, according to the report. A misdemeanor charge of fleeing and eluding will also be added and additional charges are expected.

Emanuel County Chief Deputy Rocky Davis stated that per their agency's policy the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is requested to investigate officer involved shootings that occur within their jurisdiction. The names of the officers involved in the shooting will not be released at this time, but they are employed by the Treulen County Sheriff's Office and the Oak Park Police Department.
