UPDATE | Coroner: Speed and alcohol contributing factors in fatal Gordon Highway accident

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -- The Richmond County Coroner's Office believes speed and alcohol are contributing factors to a fatal accident that took the life of a 24-year-old.
Coroner Mark Bowen says at 2:19 am Wednesday morning, first responders were called to a motor vehicle crash at the intersection of Gordon Highway and Highland Avenue.
He says a white Dodger Charger was traveling west on Gordon Highway when it struck the rear of a tractor trailer, which was stopped at a red light on Highland Avenue.
The coroner says Willie Williams Jr. of Waynesboro was killed instantly.
He says Williams died from the injuries he received in the crash and had to be extricated from the vehicle by the fire department. Williams was pronounced dead at the scene. The coroner says speed and alcohol are believed to be contributing factors of the crash.
A toxicology test will be done.
Dispatchers say all six lanes of Gordon Highway are now reopened.

The coroner says there is at least one person dead.
They say the accident happened around 2:20 am Tuesday. The coroner says a car was headed westbound on Gordon Highway and slammed into the back of a tractor trailer that was stopped at a red light on Wheeless Road.
According to the coroner, it appears that the vehicle was moving at a high rate of speed.
The Georgia Department of Transportation says all six lanes of Gordon Highway at the scene of the accident are closed.
