AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -- An estimated 2.8 million gallons of diluted wastewater has been released into Butler Creek.

The Augusta Utilities Department said the heavy rainfall on Saturday left more than 3 inches of water in a matter of a few hours. By 11 p.m., highly diluted wastewater began running out of the box at the end of the wastewater collection system.

Officials have identified projects that are needed in order to remove significant amounts of rainwater from the wastewater collection system and said they are in various stages of design and implementation.

Augusta has begun monitoring Butler Creek as required by Georgia EPD.
