AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Augusta’s burn center is one of the best for treating people from across the country and we're learning about upgrades that could really help you.

It's the largest investment the Doctors Hospital campus has ever seen. The new burn center tower will have 96 inpatient-beds along with a few more improvements.

For almost 27 years, Physician Assistant Beretta Coffman has watched the Joseph M. Still Burn Center grow.

“It's been extraordinary, it's been an honor to be a part of it,” said Coffman.

Now she's excited to be a part of the next step, a $75 million expansion, which includes a new burn tower.

“This expansion is going to allow us to take care of more patients in the 96-bed capacity," said Coffman.

It will get its own machine to sterilize equipment so they no longer have to share with the hospital.

“We sometimes have to wait on equipment to cool down and so being able to process this within the confines of our burn or is going to be very beneficial," said Coffman.

There will also be a new 550-space parking garage and 4 new operating rooms which Coffman says she's most excited about.

“The operating room is my passion and to be able to take care of more patients in an efficient manner is something that I'm looking very forward too," said Coffman.

Dr. Fred Mullins whose name is synonymous with the burn center in this community couldn't speak today not because he didn't want to, but because he lost his voice.

“If we were to ask him what he's most proud of he would say he's proud of the staff here, the reason why we're able to have this expansion is because of the staff, their willingness to take care of patients," said Coffman.

There will be a groundbreaking ceremony for the new tower tomorrow morning, and they are expecting it to open in 2020.
