AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – The ice is set, the lights are twinkling, and the doors are set to open at Augusta on Ice.
“We are setting up signs for putting all the lights up the elves are keeping busy getting everything set up for Augusta On Ice,” said Chris Boerner with Augusta on Ice.
The pieces have been coming together quickly... and elves like Laura Willoughby have been working around the clock.
“I've been hitting the ice slide, I've been doing some fabrication work…”
There's still presents to be wrapped and lights to be hung, but the plans and designs to make this winter wonderland happened as fast as reindeer.
“I feel so cool to see everything coming together, it's like wow, really getting stuff done and just to see it out here coming together.”
They didn't let a change in location only five weeks ago slip up their plans, instead, they changed all of the logistics to make this winter wonderland at the Augusta Common.
“So yesterday I realized it's only been five weeks since we moved this to the Augusta comment and I'm just amazed at what my team has been able to pull off,” said Boerner.
That's meant working with Georgia Power to get the power situation squared away to keep the ice cool and the music playing.
Just yesterday, commissioners signed off on the agreement to hold the 50-day festival at the common after saying yes to the idea back in October.
“So it has been absolutely miraculous, I would call this a Christmas miracle. But Augusta and I said such open up on Friday and it's here.”
While the agreement is just for this year, Augusta on Ice plans to make this a Christmas tradition and the city is already planning talks to bring it back for years to come.
“When people arrive at Augusta on Ice on Friday, it will be a winter wonderland. They will not even recognize the common.”
You can hit the ice on Friday, and its Frozen night. A portion of all the proceeds goes to Girls and Boys Club of Augusta.
